THANKSGIVING  Thoughts -
November 1994

Glowing golds and brilliant reds, ease us through a vibrant Indian Summer towards Thanksgiving. Back home in Canada, they’ve already celebrated their October Thanksgiving. This time of year always revives family holiday memories. I can smell my grandmother’s home made bread and pumpkin pie without even closing my eyes. Just like most families do now, we celebrated at home and wouldn’t have dreamed of going to a restaurant or eating store-bought food. Back then, as a child, I would have been thrilled to have a restaurant outing. Now, I’m glad we had that chance for family gatherings, listening to the adults talk of their growing-up days which were always worse than ours.

I have wonderful memories of everyone sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen swapping stories as Gramma worked on Thanksgiving dinner, while the parlor (living room) sat empty. Sooner or later she would good-natured1y shoo us away from the goodies she pulled from the oven of her wood stove. Remembering the closeness of those times got me through some of the bad times that everyone experiences in life. Family gatherings in my grandmother’s kitchen provide some of my fondest memories

Now I have a grandchild of my own. While we occasionally spend time in the kitchen warming up pizza or preparing a holiday dinner with the help of the family, I am more likely to be teaching him neat things on our computers. Times have changed a great deal since I was a child. Our family gatherings are a little smaller and less frequent, but I am most thankful for the family that God has given me. In a time when hatred and violence are the commonplace, having family and friends who care about you is truly a treasure.

My 8-year-old grandson. Bobby, wanted to write something for the holidays. I was happy to see that his heart is still full of niceness and not contemplating the horrors you read about some children committing nowadays. If only he can hang on to that, or better yet, spread it around a little. I hope Bobby’s writing revives warm memories of niceness that you can spread around as well. Have a peaceful and happy Thanksgiving.
