From Our Publisher: THANKSGIVING MEMORIES
from Betty Van Volkenburg,
Publisher Thanksgiving time always brings back warm memories that goes well with the warm colors of fall foliage. As I prepare to make new Thanksgiving memories with my family and friends, I also treasure the memories from my past and would like to share some from a few years ago, when my grandson was in his first semester at the University of Buffalo. He is now in his last year, and working at the Buffalo News. The following is what I wrote for our 2004 issue: "Recently I was sorting through some old print versions of our magazine and came across one from 1994 that had a poem my grandson wrote at that time when he was only 8 years old. Bobby was quite a precocious, and energetic boy, and quickly picked up our magazine preparation and editting routines. At the time I did not have a web site, but was publishing a national print magazine for singles. Bobby learned to use the formatting software and was very curious, and attentive when he sat in on our planning meetings with our Editor and writers. He also liked to write and asked if he could write something for our magazine. Naturally, as a proud grandmother I was pleased as punch to have him do that. Little did we know that his interest would continue, and lead to his receiving a scholarship in journalism at the University of Buffalo, where he started in September, 2004. In honour of that anniversary of his first professional publishing I am reprinting that column in this issue. In case you haven't discerned it yet - I am very proud of my grandson, and even more thrilled because he is doing something I was not able to do - attend college on a journalism scholarship. Not only that, he has a second scholarship in music. To commemorate his achievement I wrote a special letter to him which I am sharing with you also. November 1994 Rocket My Baby, by Betty Van Volkenburg
November 2004 " I thank God for all my family, and this beautiful fall season, which I celebrate twice - our Canadian Thanksgiving in October, with my SAM's Lambs family (Single Adult Ministry) and in November with my children and grandson. May your Thanksgiving celebrations be as blessed as mine. For my American friends - a little background on
Canadian Thanksgiving. |
