No, you didn’t miss an issue of The Singles Courier - I skipped a month for our mid-month update April was not just Tax month - it was taxing on my time as well as I tried to balance business and family activities. As a one person home based business entrepreneur you can guess which way I went - a luxury I would not have if I were still working for someone else. Easter inspired me to reconnect with my sisters with two trips to Canada in mid-April and following that inspiration turned out to be the best move I’ve made in a long time. It was great to be with people who have the same history as I and knew me back when. And then, at the end of April when my brother-in-law had a fatal heart attack I was thankful for having visited when I did. The third trip back on May 2nd for his funeral was not a happy occasion but I was able to reconnect with even more of our relatives. Of the 35 adults and kids in our immediate family, 33 of them were able to gather with us. It seemed incredible that some of us hadn’t spent time together for almost ten years and we pledged not to let so much time pass again. We probably said the same thing the last time we met but this time we’re making plans to make sure we stay in closer touch. My family is blessed with a wonderful Canadian sense of humour and it was so good to be able to laugh with them too, as we alternated between breaking down into tears of grief and breaking up with hilarious laughter at some of our memories, and some of the antics of this crazy bunch, like my nephew’s Elvis impersonation. His father would have been laughing the loudest if he were still with us. My children and I were only back home in Webster a few days when we received word of a close friend from our parish who was killed in a car accident leaving behind a young widow with 2 children, and a throng of friends from scouting, church, work and neighborhood. Our extended family once again gathered to mourn the passing of a loved one, and celebrate his life. Two deaths in two weeks is too much, but thankfully with our faith, and our faithful 'Head Shepherd' from Good Shepherd church, and again - our sense of humour, we resume the healing and resume our daily lives. The article submitted by Reverend Lance Robbins for our Religion department in this issue (Just P.U.S.H.) is very appropriate for our events lately and I hope you find value in it as well. But now, it’s time to get back to work and get caught up. I’ve been working on some additions to The Singles Center, but it requires cooperation from some companies or suppliers who have not quite met their deadlines as I was preoccupied with family matters. But I’m back and will be on top of them to get on top of what they need to do. Like our new Happy Vacations Club site that was supposed to be ready May 16. Now, it looks like June 1 will be our launch date. Thanks for your forbearance as I work on developing the very best resource for singles on the internet. As always, feel free to send feedback or offer your suggestions, - or criticisms. Of course the former is preferred but often one can learn more from objective critiques/criticism than praise. ‘With singleness and gladness of heart’ Your friend, Betty Van Volkenburg |
