Suddenly Single - Facing Disaster Alone?

Betty Van Volkenburg,
Publisher, The Singles Center

After living most of my life as a single parent I know that single parenthood is a daunting undertaking. Even when someone chooses divorce over a bad marriage, if there are children from the marriage, the surviving or custodial parent’s grieving over the loss of the marriage they thought would last forever, may get lost in trying to help their children cope with their grief. Yet, the single parent’s emotional and spiritual well being is even more important than the children’s as they are depending on a healthy, supportive, nurturing parent, to do the work of two parents now.

If I had the chance to speak with the new single parents in New York City I would say:

Do what airlines advise us to do when demonstrating the safety procedures - put on your own oxygen mask first, then take care of your children. While your children are surely suffering too, they are probably more resilient than you are, and you have a long term job ahead of you.

If you haven’t already found support services, contact the Red Cross or other local agency, but go to a grief support group with a trained, professional staff for you and your children.

MAKE room (not - try to find time) for leisure and recreation in your life for both you and your children, individually and as a family.

Get active in your place of worship or participate in an online Spiritual site, like www.beliefnet.com

Make contacts with other single parents or single parent organizations, like http://www.parentswithoutpartners.org/   and go out socially at least once a week, even if it’s just a movie - WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT, - do NOT put it off ‘until the time is "right" ‘, the right time is now when your children need you to be stable. You’ll be glad you did afterwards, and your children will thank you. A happy parent means happy children - that’s "happy" as in well-balanced, not the clowning life of the party, though someday you will be able to get back there. Your local yellow pages has listings of single support organizations or you can search our Singles Web directory

You have lived through the worst tragedy in world history, and the strength you gain from that coping, is preparing you to be able to live through whatever is ahead of you. It’s your choice what the quality of that life is for you and your children.

Although it doesn’t seem like it now, your current wounds will heal with time, and God’s blessing.
