A New Year's Resolution - Pursuit of Happiness

By Betty Van Volkenburg, Publisher

Here in Upstate New Year where winters are usually cold and grey, God has answered my prayer for a milder winter, and so far it's been good and hopefully so will New Year too. I know the sunshine is behind those rain clouds too, and may poke through later today. I am most thankful for the mild weather, but my apologies go out to the Polar bears who may be paying for it.

I usually have my New Year's resolutions goals and plans decided by now but this year I have only one and it is taking a little more thought. My resolution is to diligently pursue Happiness, which was inspired by my review of a past article I had done on my favorite author, Bishop John Shelby Spong.  I first met Bishop Spong when he was the keynote speaker at a Finger Lakes Episcopal conference in Geneva NY, and at that time he said his mantra was to "Live Fully, Love Wastefully". That is what I intend to do, starting this year. I had considered this when I first heard him speak, but I let other distractions interfere, so it's time to get back to it.

So I have to make a list of all the things that bring happiness to me and make sure I include those things regularly. One of the best ways I can fulfill this resolution is through SAM's Lambs, the Episcopal Singles Ministry I have been leading for the past four years. We have interesting discussion groups and activities, including a social committee where I can participate and make suggestions.

Many years ago I wrote an article "How Do You Find Happiness - Just like you eat an elephant - one bite a time", so I will take my own advice and start working on it. For several years I have been coping with severe financial problems due to harassment by the IRS but things are looking better and I can turn my attention to happier things, like planning an advertising budget for my business. See my article - Have IRS Abuses Plagued Your Life, Too?

Now, I must get back to my list of happiness goals, and try to remember all the things that used to bring me happiness along with some new things I've never tried.

May your New Year be as promising as mine, and be full of joy and prosperity. But, don't just sit back and wait for it to come to you - get out there and grab it.
