Hot Dog! What a Great Idea!

From Singles, The Magazine for Today's Single

In the Greater Rochester NY area, The Singles Center’s Community Relations Director Candy Pape trained and worked with local volunteer groups in one of the most enjoyable and profitable volunteer ideas we’ve seen. And in other cities and towns across America as well, there is a good chance that the person selling you your hot dog and cold beer is really working for a non-profit group, on a fun(d)-raising event that benefits both profit and non-profit businesses.

For the several years Candy led a flock of good natured and generous volunteers from her church, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Webster NY, who have been getting together to promote fellowship while selling hot dogs to sports fans at Frontier Field in Rochester NY, an odd combination that’s turning a profit.

Candy says, "It may sound too good to be true, but the camaraderie is genuine, and so far everyone involved has had few, if any, regrets. Some games are better than others - you take your chances, but even a bad day at the ballpark inspires more volunteer involvement than a good day at the car wash."

So, if your group is looking for a new fund-raiser why not take your crew "out to the ball game", or if your company is in a position to help service organizations earn money why not consider partnering with your local sports venue.

The idea is simple, non-profit groups trade what they have – workers and man hours – for what they need-money. Why does this arrangement work so well? Because everyone gets what they want, a rarity in real life. The sports venue gets outgoing dedicated people with a keen interest in selling the product. The non-profit group gets a percentage of the sales, usually 10% net, and a feel-good bonding experience for their volunteers. And, maybe most important of all, the buying public gets a high level of satisfaction as well as service for concessions dollar. With the rising cost of just about everything most people like knowing part of their money is going directly to a local organization, sort of a new spin on "instant gratification".

The Catering management of the stadium or arena, provides the entire product, equipment and training needed, volunteers just bring the energy and enthusiasm.

Candy adds, "Working at sports games can bring added publicity for the volunteer group. Their name can be included in press releases, PA announcements and score board listings during the game. Working the games is fun. It’s fun to work with old friends and make new ones. You will not believe how fast the time goes by and you cannot beat the atmosphere."
