Back-to-School, for Everyone

From Singles, The Magazine for Today's Single

Singles interested in children's education -- whether or not they are parents -- can get involved in a variety of ways.

It may also be in our own interests. After all, schools receive tax funding, in most cases through property taxes, and may also get part of their money from the state. In Iowa, for example, more than 60 percent of the state's budget goes to schools. Since that money comes from a combination of sales and income taxes, it's coming directly from those who live, work and shop inside the state.

With singles an ever growing segment of the population, we're paying for our schools whether or not we have children who attend them.

Schools need volunteers -- from parents who can help with classroom parties to people who teach through Junior Achievement, many schools use volunteers in a variety of roles.

Many singles don't have time to be a homeroom parent who may spend several hours a week in a classroom, but that's no reason not to get involved in other ways.

Find out about your local school board. By calling the local school district, you can learn when the board meets. Local newspapers, radio and television stations are likely to cover important news from the board but board members determine how much money will be spent on schools and how much tax will be collected.

If you have as little as two or three hours a week, you can volunteer through Junior Achievement to help teach students -- both in elementary and high school -- about economics. JA's respected programs rely on volunteers with expertise in business or simply a strong interest in students to help young people learn about our economy and how it works in the real world. You don' t have to be president of a company to get involved.

There's also a parent-teacher organization at your area's schools which also relies on volunteers to get things done, from raising funds for various projects to helping improve the education students receive.

And, of course, calling your local district to find out where volunteers are needed also can provide opportunities.

Singles who volunteer in some capacity enrich their lives, meet new and interesting people and help their communities. It's a great deal for singles as well as schools.
