Are Singles Treated Fairly by the Rest of
Society?:
A Five Part Series on Single Living
Over the next few months, this site will present a series
of articles that aim to illuminate a few choice injustices done to single people. These
particular issues were chosen for their insidious breadth and depth of effect, as well as
all of them having a passive societal approval. They are often legal practices, and they
may often be accepted ideas (by those not single primarily), yet they are wrong. Each
month's article will deliver an in-depth look at the organizations, policies, and
activities engaged to discriminate against single people. Beginning with last September's,
here they are in order:
Astrology: CANCER: The
Crab If you were born
between June 22 and July 22 (approximately), your sun sign is Cancer. There’s a myth about astrology: that your
sun sign is all-inclusive of your personality. Not true. No one is just
one sign. In fact, we all have many signs in our horoscope; this is the
key to our individuality. It’s the combination and placement of signs, and
the planets and houses, that makes us all different. Only your own
personal birth chart will tell you what your specific personality traits
are. What follows is a general description of the sun sign Cancer. For the
most part, it should very accurately describe Cancers who are part of your
life-or you, if you share the sign of the crab. The Woman The Man
The Lover
Humor/Humour: Lewis And Clark:
The Original Single Guy Road Trip!
Can’t you just imagine it: "Oh, by the way Honey, I’m packing up some stuff and going on an expedition to see what’s on the other side of the country. Just me and a bunch of the guys. We shouldn’t be gone for much more than, say, two years. And, oh yeah, our guide is a 16 year old girl. Bye, Sweetie. Kiss." Well, of course Lewis and Clark were single!
Who were these wild, single guys, willing to attempt the granddaddy of all road trips, back in a time with no paved roads, no 7-Elevens nor even any cassette tape decks? Meriwether Lewis was born the son of a tobacco farmer in Virginia in 1774, but found out early in life that he had a strong sense of adventure and a love of nature. No, he wasn’t the type to sit around the plantation
watching the tobacky grow. He was merely eighteen years old when he first suggested to Thomas Jefferson that an expedition to discover a water route from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean might not be a bad idea.
Careers &
Education: A Single’s Guide to Careers with Optimal Growth
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks employment growth and identifies the fastest growing occupations -- which can be helpful to singles looking for new careers or deciding whether or not to choose a particular field.
Computers and health care are the two fields which are common to many of the occupations -- both fields where being single can be to your advantage because of the hours.
In the computer field, computer engineers, computer support specialists, systems analysts, database administrators, desktop publishing specialists, data processing equipment repairers and electronic semiconductor processors are all among the fastest growing.
Health: Singing the
Hymn of the Gym!
Singles can and often do feel a sense of isolation in life. In that
case, life needs to be about meeting new people and trying new things.
There are plenty of opportunities for singles to become part of a group or
an organization. Participating as a member of something larger can be
motivating, especially when it comes to fitness.
These last days of warmth and sunshine
inspire people to step outside and walk or run or play. But soon it will
be too cold for people (with the exception of the most die-hard exercise
fanatics) to get in shape in the fresh air. Luckily, there is a place you
can go to burn off all those extra calories that can creep on under those
bulky winter sweaters. Almost every town has at least one. You probably
walk by a gym everyday and see people sweating inside, and feel a pang of
guilt for not being in there sweating with them.
Entertainment: Warm-Weather Fun That
Won't Break The Bank
(NAPSI)-If a family vacation isn't in the budget this season, there are plenty
of affordable ways to still have fun in the sun.
That's good news, considering that AAA recently recommended two adults on
vacation set a daily travel budget of $244 for lodging and meals. Add children
into the equation and the costs can quickly add up.
Those sticking close to home this year might try something as simple as spending
the night as a family outdoors, away from the TV and computer. Just pitch a tent
in your backyard for the fun of a camping trip with all the luxuries of home.
Community: Volunteering - a
Model Role for Singles
Volunteering became the hot
trend back in the 90s. According to a study conducted by the Independent Sector and
the Gallup Organization in 1995, about 93 million adults ages eighteen and over
volunteered in 1995. Thirty-five to
fifty-five-year-olds were the most giving of their time, followed by twenty-five to
thirty-four-year-olds. On average, volunteers gave 4.2 hours per week, and devoted
an estimated total of 20.3 billion hours to both formal and informal volunteering in
1995. Eighty-five percent of those doing volunteer work are working on one or more
serious social problems. Of that group, 55 percent help the elderly and 46 percent
volunteer for a child or youth-related problem. Additionally, more women than men
volunteer (52 percent to 45 percent).

Books: Why Christianity Must Change or Die:
A Bishop Speaks to Believers In Exile Author: John Shelby Spong
Reviewed by Amazon.com
Shelby Spong is the retired Episcopal Bishop of Newark, New Jersey, and has enjoyed a career filled with controversy, much of it thanks to his many bestselling books, such as Born of a Woman, Living in Sin?, and Liberating the Gospels. He has tapped into an audience of people who are at once spiritually starved and curious, yet unwilling or unable to embrace Christianity.
Spong refers to himself as a believer in exile. He believes the world into which Christianity was born was limited and provincial, particularly when viewed from the perspective of the progress in knowledge and technology made over the past two millennia. This makes any ideas or beliefs formulated in 1st-century Judea totally inadequate to our progressive minds and lives today. So Spong is in exile until
Christianity is re-formed to discard all of the outdated and, according to Spong, false tenets of Christianity.
Travel:
Vacation
Dreams/Vacation Nightmares
So,
youve packed your bags and checked your airline ticket twice to make sure
youll be on time and your neighbor is taking care of the plants and the kitty.
Youve sworn you wont call the office from your West Indian resort - an
impossibility if you are in the Colorado Rockies polishing the hiking trails with an
ecological organization. What is out of your hands, and the most fundamental element of
vacationing, is whether youll come back and look at the new photos on your
refrigerator to be reminded of the dream vacationor the nightmare one! In either
case, youve already made the stories famous at every party conversation since.
Religion & Spirituality: From The Rev: Just P. U. S. H. Rev. Lance Robbins
Dear Friends in Christ
I often receive interesting stories and articles that I save and the following one is appropriate at any time as we go through our schedules, one day at a time.
A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light, and God appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin.
The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all of his
might. So, this the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up
to sun down; his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the
unmoving rock, pushing with all of his might. Each night the man returned to his
cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.............

............At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just a simple obedience and faith in Him. By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves the mountains.

The Mediator: Q&A on Separation, Divorce, and Relationships. Should We Plan The Wedding?
Q.
I know for a fact that my fiancee is still seeing his
former girlfriend, even though he told me he isnt.
Should we go ahead and plan the wedding?
A.
Only you can decide that. But if a person lies to you
before the wedding, the recital of marriage vows probably
wont evoke a magical cure for the future. Review for more Q & A....
Money: Savvy Singles Do It With Interest
It was no less a scientific luminary than Albert Einstein who said that the greatest mathematical discovery of all time was compound interest. Now, even though the frizzy-haired egghead is not generally remembered as a single, he did know a thing or three about numbers and the way they worked.
You, however, are single, and realize that the responsibility for a sound financial future lies squarely on your own shoulders. Which is all the more reason why you should understand the value of letting your money work for you, and the gigantic oak tree of wealth that can be grown from the humblest investment acorn.
Sports
& Fitness: FORE! PLAY It's the mantra of the single woman: "Where can I go to meet men?" Or, more accurately, "Where can I go to meet men that isn't a dimly-lit basement with overpriced drinks, sticky floors, and drunken hairy-chested louts stumbling over to me and asking me my sign?" Well, Ladies, the one-word answer is based more on logic and personal observation than on any in-depth research
or intense investigation: Golf.
Yes golf, that silly game where you hit a little white ball with a stick and then go chasing after it and then hit it again. And I'm not recommending this as some obsessed golf fanatic who lives for his Saturday morning tee time. Heck, I haven't even played the game in ten years and I didn't play it much back then. It just seems a logical step for women who want to meet men.
