RELATIONSHIP TIPS & TOOLS: Q: How Do I Meet People? A: Throw out the Fear. An interview with Ann Boe, author of "Is Your Net Working" and "How To Net Your Playmate." Singles Staff Ask Ann Boe what builds successful business and professional relationships, and she’ll probably give you a one-word answer: networking. Boe, a professional motivational speaker in the field of networking, was interviewed by Singles, the Magazine for Today’s Single when she was the keynote speaker at a Singles Conference, Sailing Solo, which was sponsored by this magazine. Although it was a few years ago, her advice, like all good advice is still relevant today. Boe believes the same thing that prevents people from getting ahead in business often prevents them from forming lasting and fulfilling relationships: fear of rejection. "The number one question that I get at speaking engagements is "How do I walk into a room and meet people I don’t know?" Boe’s answer: "Throw out the fear." "It’s okay to say, ‘I’d like to get to know you better.’ If somebody says no, you’ll still be here tomorrow." The key to meeting people is to "be visible," according to Boe. "A lot of people hide out because they fear rejection, but you have to get out and circulate," she advises. Boe began her career focussing on professional networking, and co-authored a book entitled Is Your "Net" Working? A top-selling business handbook, it outlines the basics of successful networking. Boe addresses how to do better business by building better contacts, and provides many examples of successful and failed networking attempts. What led her into the field of personal networking? As a single woman, Boe was often asked about her personal life: recognizing that the same skills required for professional networking could be applied to personal networking, she decided to launch into a new area-the art of forming personal relationships. Her book and video, How To Net Your Playmate, helps readers apply the tools for successful business networking to personal relationships. Boe advises people to take a lighter approach in making personal contacts. She attributes people’s inability to get to know one another to what she terms "resume dating." "People have been picking people based on the wrong values....what job they have, how much money they make, what kind of car they drive. Find out who the person is inside. Can I have fun with this person? We need to have fun again." Here are a few more of Boe’s tips for personal networking:
