HUMOR ME:

‘Tis the Season to Be Foolish

From Singles, The Magazine for Today's Single

What a year for singles! We have a single candidate running for president, we’re required to pay less on our taxes than ever before, Microsoft set up a dating service for its single employees and Oprah decided to target her show at singles, instead of middle-aged women for the spring season.

Did you buy it? If you did, then you must be named the fool for tis’ the time for pranks and jokes and those gullible ones who fall for every fabrication of the truth must be set apart and laughed at for their folly.

I’m sending you a reminder, so you don’t forget that April Fool’s Day lies just around the corner and cruel, wicked pranksters plan to seek you out for their enjoyment.

The first of April, some do say
Is set apart for All Fool’s Day;
But why the people call it so
Nor I, nor they themselves, do know,
But on this day are people sent
On purpose for pure merriment.

Anonymous

True, most of us do not know why the first of April is dedicated to the fool, a person of no good sense or wit, yet on that day I and I’m sure many of you have fallen under the dreaded namesake.

James Thurber said, "Humor is a serious thing. I like to think of it as one of our greatest and earliest national resources which must be preserved at all costs." Perhaps this explains why we continue to practice the aged tradition of All Fool’s Day. We need laughter and jest in our lives, and making another play the fool, or playing the part ourselves seems the best way to lighten up relations between people while celebrating our innate sense of humor.

Some say New Year’s day fell on April 1st, while others argue the day to be March 25. Regardless, up until the 16th century, the period between these two dates was a festive time to rejoice in spring and the turn of the year.

In 1562, Pope Gregory introduced the new Christian calendar, marking New Year’s day as January 1st. Yet, due to lack of media resources (internet, T.V. radio, etc.) few heard the news and even among those who did, many chose not to believe the decree. This resulted in the continuation of a spring New Year’s.

Those who accepted the change played tricks on the non-believers calling them "April fool’s." They sent the others on "fool’s errands" by inviting them to non-existent parties. Foolish gifts also became a way to mock the ignorant.

The origin of the holiday is hard to decipher since France is not the only country to regard the spring season as a time to revel in merriment. Both England and Scotland celebrate the day, where the fool is known as an "April gowk." In India the festival of Holi begins in March as a recognition of the arrival of spring. People throw colored powders on anyone they pass or fill balloons with dyed water, spraying others with the colored liquid. On the final day, March 31st, people celebrate through acts of mischief. I heard another theory which states that April Fool’s started when the Christian Army attacked the Muslims in Spain by surprising them.

Today, we play practical jokes on friends and strangers alike, aiming to make everyone including "the fool" laugh on April 1st. In France, children trick each other by placing paper fish on their friends’ backs. The day is called "Poisson d’Avril" dating back to when the victim of a prank was called the "poisson d’avril" or "April fish." The connection to the fish stems from the time of year, when the sun leaves the zodiacal sign of the Pisces.

I think April Fool’s day is probably one of our most important holidays. Unlike Christmas and Easter, where the origins of celebration lie in the religious stories of others, this holiday rejoices in something familiar to us all, our ability to laugh. Play a joke on someone else and see how good it makes you feel when you experience a good bout of laughter. On April 1st, let us remember the words of Mark Twain, who said, "The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year."
