From The Singles Center FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: THE SINGLES CENTER OPENS REGIONAL WINGS Unique Internet community gives single adults a voice, a forum, and a place to play Webster, NY, July 15, 2004 -- Census records show that single adults represent over 50% of the United States population. The fact that we have such a high percentage of singles in our country often goes unrecognized, due to misrepresentations in television, radio, and print media. "The high percentage of singles in our population clearly shows that we deserve recognition as a major segment of society, all though many seem slow in giving this recognition," says Betty Van Volkenburg, founder and president of The Singles Center. "For centuries, marriage has been our society’s expected norm, with singlehood being treated as a transient state. Even though half our population is single, our laws, social etiquette, and customs are all geared toward married couples." To give single adults a sense of community and voice, Van Volkenburg has developed The Singles Center, an online community for and about singles. "Our main goal is to give a sense of identity and community to a diverse, growing group of people who have been made to live by standards set by the other half of the population," says Van Volkenburg. The site, found at www.SinglesCenter.com features Singles, The Magazine for Today’s Single – a twice monthly online magazine with singles oriented articles by professional writers; the Singles Courier – a weekly ezine; SingleSmiles – the Center’s own cartoon; a Resource Directory of Singles links; a National list of Singles Groups; a singles Travel Club; as well as a Business wing which includes services and opportunities; with Career services planned in the near future. Recently a new Regional Wing was added, and now singles will be able to locate and network with single people in their own neighborhood. The first Wing is for Upstate NY which is the home area for The Singles Center in Webster NY, a town near Rochester NY, on the south shore of Lake Ontario. With the proximity to Canada, it is expected that networking will be extended to Toronto and other nearby Canadian cities. The new Fast Ferry between Rochester NY and Toronto Ontario will probably become well known to singles on both sides of the border, and facilitate travel from Toronto to the Caribbean when cruises are scheduled there. The Singles Center is free to browse for all visitors but VIP benefits and totally free personals are reserved for VIP Membership in The Singles Center. The paid membership package is $5./month and includes a long list of benefits, with additional travel benefits, and shopping discounts in www.OurGalleria.com At present there is a pre-launch special for Upstate NY singles to become VIP members for only $3/month, and includes a special discount to a Singles Mixer at the Renaissance Festival in Sterling NY on August 7 and 8.
